"Being a clinical social worker is a calling. I am passionate about what I do."
Laura A. Gillom began her social work career in 2003 with the Mississippi Department of Mental Health, serving clients with intellectual disabilities. She went on to work as a medical social worker in 2006. In 2010 after completing a master's degree in social work, she became a therapist on the Geripsych unit and later the social work supervisor at an inpatient psychiatric facility.
Laura has been a social worker for more than 21 years. In January 2023, Compassion and Wellness Counseling, LLC was born. She has dedicated her life to serving others in ministry and in the therapeutic setting. As a person of faith, she practices holistic health. She is committed to providing her clients with the tools they need to function in their own environments while helping them navigate through the issues of life.
My approach
My most common therapeutic approach is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). I also use person-centered and other techniques drawn from a number of evidence-based treatment orientations. The theoretical approach used depends on the needs of the client.

My focus
I work with all kinds of clients with all sorts of problems. The majority of the clients I see are experiencing bullying (teens), stress, anxiety, depression, relationship issues, and trauma. Ideal clients are clients who are ready to work. Clients unwilling to work through their trauma, especially those with children, are doing themselves a disservice. Children deserve a healed parent.

My communication style
I provide nonjudgmental safe spaces in the therapeutic environment. Listening carefully to the individual and navigating sessions at a pace that seems appropriate is important. This usually allows clients to feel free to open up and share the emotional load they’ve been carrying.

My journey to mental healthcare
As a 16 year old freshman, I entered college with the intent of becoming an accountant. That was not my calling. I found my niche in social work and developed a passion for mental health during grad school. I have been chosen to do the work of a therapist. I am passionate about mental health, the need for emotional healing, and holistic health.

My goals for you
I allow clients to discuss what they have always wanted to do or think that they would like to do. Then, I explain SMART goals and why it’s important to follow this acronym. We agree on the goals he/she would like to achieve.

My first session with you
A client’s first session with me will consist of initial paperwork. It is also a time for us to get to know each other and get an idea of how to proceed.
